5.5.1

All apps

  • Settings → Player gets Audio language, Subtitle language and Subtitles (Automatic, Always or Off), so every video starts in your languages, and the audio and subtitles you pick in the player are kept for that film or series, on resume and on every episode.
  • Subtitle size and Subtitle background (an outline or a translucent box) in Settings → Player apply in both players.
  • Subtitles of a filled or zoomed picture stay on screen.
  • Dolby Vision profile 5, which has no ordinary HDR picture under it, now plays with the right colours, in SDR, on a device with no Dolby Vision decoder, rather than in the second player with its colours off.
  • AVS+ video in a TS, as Chinese TV channels broadcast it, plays in the second player.
  • A file the app isn’t allowed to read now says so, rather than blaming the connection.
  • The Yonto Pro page lists what Free has and what Pro adds, with Pro on too.

5.5.0

All apps

  • Sync (beta; Settings → Sync, part of Yonto Pro and the 7-day trial): keeps your watch history, resume points, Watch list, recent searches, sources, repos, titles matched with Wrong title?, and (when turned on for a device) installed plugins and your TMDB key in step across every device you use Yonto Player on, encrypted on your devices before anything leaves them so no server can read it.
  • Sync works through Yonto’s server or a self-hosted open-source sync server (Your own server). A new device joins by comparing six digits on both screens, and you can save a recovery key or keep individual sources, repos, or plugins on one device alone.
  • Settings → Player gets Resume play (resume, ask where to start, or start over), Skip forward and Skip back (5 to 60 seconds each), Play the next episode automatically, Remember the playback speed and Always use the second player, which starts every title in the second player where the first would have played it.
  • A video the server refuses now says so with the status, “This title isn’t available right now. (HTTP 403)”, instead of a sentence about details the source only sends to the sites it names, and offers Retry.
  • A video the device’s decoders can’t play, such as 10-bit HEVC on a decoder that only does 8-bit, goes to the second player rather than showing a green or black picture, and a DASH stream plays in the first player.
  • Use a different key on the Yonto Pro page moves a device that already has Pro to another licence, and a trial’s answer now shows beside the trial rather than under the key’s Activate.

TV

  • On Android TV, “Hey Google, pause”, a Bluetooth headset’s buttons, Google TV’s now-playing card and its phone remote’s play and pause now reach the player.

Phone and tablet

  • Settings → Player also gets Fill the screen (every video starts filled), Show seek buttons, Hold to play faster (1.25×, 1.5× or 2×; hold the picture to play faster until you let go), Picture in picture when leaving the app, and Ask before playing on mobile data.
  • The row under the player’s progress bar is play or pause, previous and next, with nothing floating over the middle of the picture, and the player’s buttons are redrawn.

5.4.12

All apps

  • On Android, a title handed to the software player (an AVI, a WMV, or a 10-bit MKV the device cannot decode) no longer closes the app, which the release builds since 5.4.8 did.
  • A stream that stops arriving while the software player plays is now a dropped connection, tried again from where it stopped, rather than Playback finished with the title marked watched.
  • A playback error says what actually went wrong, and handing a title to the software player for a track the device can’t decode no longer shows an error first.
  • Casting converts an MKV or AVI for the receiver by what the file is, not by its address, so an MKV played as stored by a media server, or one named .mp4, now casts.

5.4.11

All apps

  • Seeking or resuming in the software player closes the previous stream connection as soon as the new range request arrives, so servers that allow only one active stream per file do not stall on the loading spinner and time out.

5.4.10

All apps

  • On Emby, Jellyfin and Plex, videos with WMA audio tracks are advertised for direct playback, so the server streams them without transcoding audio to AAC.

5.4.9

All apps

  • Videos using VC-1 video or in VOB containers now play through the software player, so DVDs and VC-1 files play with picture and sound.
  • On Android, videos with FLAC, Vorbis, Opus, ALAC, or WMA audio tracks are decoded in software, so more audio formats play without transcoding.
  • On Android, a title whose audio cannot be decoded or 10-bit H.264 video that hardware decoders cannot handle now falls back to the software player instead of playing silently or showing a black screen.
  • A video whose address redirects is read at its target from then on, and its target is refreshed if it moves again.
  • On Android, playlist streams whose addresses have no file extension are checked so they play as HLS streams.
  • On Apple devices, a video whose address has no file extension is identified before playback so it opens in the right player.
  • In Settings → About on Android, a Beta updates option lets you receive beta pre-release builds.

TV

  • The title in Home’s banner is prepared while the remote rests on it, so Play opens it faster.

Phone and tablet

  • On iOS, a video that fails to produce a picture falls back to the software player so it plays instead of staying black.

5.4.8

All apps

  • Some Emby videos stopped playing after the last update. We’ve taken back its playback changes while we work out why, and they play again.

5.4.7

All apps

  • Pressing play on a title no longer waits behind the shelves still loading on Home, so it starts sooner.
  • Videos start playing a little sooner, and a video whose address redirects is read at its final address from then on.
  • Subtitles on Android are drawn smaller, still following the caption size you chose in the system’s settings.

TV

  • The title in Home’s banner is read while the remote rests on it, so Play opens it faster.

Phone and tablet

  • Tapping the current tab goes to its top: it closes what is open over it, scrolls Home and Browse to the top, takes Settings back to its first page and puts the cursor in Search’s field.

5.4.6

All apps

  • Search lists the results of the source you’re using first, and a title that several of your sources have shows that source’s poster and description.
  • Resuming a Plex title that the server converts for playback now starts at the place you left, instead of at the beginning.
  • Emby and Plex titles start a little faster, because the server is asked about Premiere or Plex Pass once per sign-in, not on every play.

5.4.5

All apps

  • On Home, your Jellyfin, Emby and Plex libraries, and the films, series and other videos of your own files, now show what was added most recently first, and a series moves up when a new episode arrives. In Browse, Sort puts a library in title order instead, or by year or rating on a media server.
  • Coming back to a source of your own files whose scan finished, or that was rescanned, while you were looking at another source now shows its videos on Home, instead of “No videos found in this source yet” or what it had before.

5.4.4

All apps

  • Recent searches: Search now remembers what you searched for and lists the last 10 when nothing is typed. Pick one to search it again, or remove one, or clear them all. A search is only kept once you open a result or press Search, not while you type.
  • Subtitles on Android are white text with a dark outline and no black box behind them. If you’ve set a caption style in your device’s accessibility settings, that style is used instead.

TV

  • Also on on a title’s page now runs across the whole page, under the episodes, instead of being cut off halfway.
  • Coming back from the player after starting something from Continue playing puts you back on that title, not at the top of Home.

Phone and tablet

  • Play a link: next to Add source, paste a video’s address or pick a video file on your device and play it straight away, without adding a source. It’s free and doesn’t go into your History.
  • Open with: a video file or link from another app can now be opened in Yonto Player.
  • A series’ Download button is now in the row under Play, next to Watch list, like a film’s.
  • When you choose episodes to download, a video that streams in pieces no longer shows a wrong size of a few KB.

5.4.3

All apps

  • The demo library you see before adding your own source now has real films: Spring, Wing It!, Big Buck Bunny, Coffee Run, Glass Half and the Caminandes series, open films by the Blender studio, with their own posters and credits.
  • A video or disc image whose file name has a space, brackets or letters outside English now plays in Yonto Player’s own player instead of failing. That includes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray images that aren’t copy-protected.
  • HDR videos that play in Yonto Player’s own player (a disc image, or a video your device has no decoder for) are toned down to SDR, instead of looking dim and flat.
  • In your files library, a title that shows a picture of its video now fills its poster card, and the picture leaves out the video’s black bars, on the card and at the top of Home.
  • Settings → Metadata: add your own TMDB key and posters, plots and cast are looked up on TMDB straight from your device instead. Without a key nothing changes. On a TV, Set up from your phone sends the key from your phone.

TV

  • A title’s page shows its picture as bright as Home does, with the words kept readable over it.

Phone and tablet

  • Downloads now work for videos that stream in pieces (HLS), which most plugin sources play. A video stitched from several parts keeps its full length, and once it’s downloaded it’s kept as an MP4 where it can be, so seeking is instant. Live streams still can’t be downloaded.
  • Choose what to download: a season’s Download opens a list of its episodes to tick, starting with the next 3 unwatched, with each one’s size, and a film with more than one version lets you pick which one.

5.4.2

TV

  • Home’s top picture and a title’s page no longer look like they have a dark filter over them. The picture now shows at its own brightness, darkened only behind the words, and a title’s page darkens as you scroll down to its episodes.

5.4.1

All apps

  • In your files library, a video with no poster or backdrop now shows a picture of the video itself: the thumbnail its folder or cloud drive has for it, or else a frame from the video. A frame is never read from a cloud drive.

TV

  • Holding Up from far down Home now scrolls back to the top instead of leaving the screen stuck part way down.

Phone and tablet

  • Downloads now work from any source that streams over the network, not just your own Jellyfin, Emby, Plex or WebDAV: sources added with a plugin, Custom HTTP sources and cloud drives. A folder on your device and SMB shares don’t download yet. A video that streams in pieces (as most plugin sources do) or a live stream can’t be downloaded yet, and says so when you try.
  • Downloads are now part of Yonto Pro, and the 7-day trial includes them. What you’ve already downloaded keeps playing without Pro.
  • Home’s top picture and a title’s poster take a little less of the screen on an upright phone.

5.4.0

All apps

  • Offline: each source keeps what it last showed you, and shows it when it can’t be reached, with a note such as “You’re offline · saved 3 days ago”. When the connection comes back, Yonto Player asks the source again. Posters already on your device stay.
  • Skip intro and credits now also works for your own files and cloud drives, and for anything your Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server hasn’t marked. Skip times are looked up on TheIntroDB, and your server’s own marks always come first. Settings → Player → Skip intro and credits has Look up skip times online to turn it off.
  • Settings is easier to find your way around: Content, General, Privacy & security, then System. Plugins and Repos are under Settings → Advanced, and Player has its own page, with Skip intro and credits under it. On a TV, each skip choice opens a list you pick from.
  • Let the server convert videos: your Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server is told what your device can play and converts what it can’t, such as 4K HDR on a 1080p TV box, so it plays smoothly instead of stuttering. It’s on by default, and the switch is in the source’s settings. Converting HDR to SDR needs Emby Premiere or Plex Pass on those servers.
  • A title page says what a copy is: 4K, 1080p, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG or Dolby Vision.
  • Blu-ray disc images (.iso) play their main title, and DVD images play their main film, with no disc menus. Copy-protected discs don’t play.
  • A Dolby Vision profile 5 file whose colours will look off on your device now says so in the player.
  • On Android, a video your device has no decoder for now plays in Yonto Player’s own player instead of showing black.
  • After you seek, the progress bar stays where you let go while the video catches up.
  • A source without search says so plainly, with no Retry that can’t help.
  • Outside Chinese, the Chinese cloud drives are called Quark Cloud Drive, UC Cloud Drive and Tianyi Cloud Drive.

TV

  • Holding the remote to fast forward or rewind moves at half the speed, so it’s easier to land where you want.

Phone and tablet

  • Downloads: download titles from your own Plex, Jellyfin and Emby servers, and videos in your own WebDAV folders, to watch without a connection. Download a film from its page, or a series by the episode or by the season (next 3 unwatched, all unwatched, or the whole season). Downloads run on Wi-Fi only unless you turn that off, and the original file is kept with its subtitles. Home has a Downloaded shelf, which comes first when you’re offline. A downloaded title keeps your place, and your server hears where you stopped once you’re back online. Settings → Downloads shows the space used and has Remove all downloads.
  • You can cast to DLNA TVs, Kodi boxes and AV receivers from Play on.
  • Casting from Plex, Jellyfin or Emby asks your server for what the TV you’re casting to can play.
  • When your phone converts a video for casting, HDR keeps its colours instead of turning dim and grey, and the picture keeps its right shape.
  • The player opens in landscape on a phone, with a button to turn it upright. The scrub bar sits lower when the phone is on its side.
  • On an upright phone, the hero at the top of Home and of a title’s page is taller.
  • In Browse, a new category or folder always shows its filters, even after scrolling. On a tablet, long category names wrap instead of being cut short.
  • Yonto Pro’s page shows what Pro adds, and what Free already includes.

5.3.0

All apps

  • Watch list: save a title to watch later. A title’s page has a button for it, a round plus beside Play on a TV that turns into a tick, and an icon under Play on a phone or tablet that turns into a check. Home has a Watch list shelf after Continue playing, hidden while it is empty, and on a TV it ends with See all. On a phone or tablet, a card’s menu on Home, Search and Browse says Add to watch list or Remove from watch list. The list is kept on the device for all your sources together, a title leaves it when you play it, and deleting a source takes its titles off. It holds up to 1000 titles.
  • Settings → Sources is one list, in the order you set, whichever repo or plugin a source came from, and each row says where it came from. On a phone, drag a source by its handle to put it anywhere; on a TV, hold OK on a source, or open it and use Move up and Move down, which say its place in the list. The source switcher and the fallback source follow that order.
  • A title’s Also on list sits below a series’ episodes, and beside the title when it has only one way to play.
  • Posters and descriptions looked up online are kept once for all your sources, so the same title in a second source, a source you add again or a language you switch back to shows at once, without asking again.
  • Continue playing keeps the poster of a film you opened from a folder.

Phone and tablet

  • A phone’s bar has four tabs: History is no longer one. It opens from the heading of Continue playing, and from Settings → Privacy → Watch history. A TV keeps its History button.
  • The player’s picture-in-picture button also works for a film the app plays itself, such as an AVI or an MKV file, on Android.
  • The player’s buttons are plain icons with no background over the picture, Lock sits at the end of the bottom row, and the speed button is no longer cut off when the phone is held upright.
  • Choosing sources in Settings → Sources, and in a repo, ends with Done instead of a back arrow that read as going back.
  • On Android, a video a Chromecast or an AirPlay receiver cannot decode (an AVI with MJPEG or Xvid video, for one) casts now: the phone converts it as it plays, and it starts from the beginning a few seconds after you press cast.

5.2.0

All apps

  • Skip intro and skip credits for Plex, Jellyfin and Emby. When your server has marked an intro, a recap or the credits, a button appears over the picture and OK or a tap jumps past it; over the credits of an episode with a next one it says Next episode. Settings → Player chooses for Intro, Recap and Credits whether Yonto Player asks (the default), skips by itself after a five-second countdown you can cancel with Back, or never skips.
  • Plex, Jellyfin and Emby keep your watched marks in step with the server. A title you watched in the official app shows as watched here, and Resume picks up where the server has you.
  • Yonto Player tells the server what you watch: Jellyfin and Emby hear where you stopped and what you finished, and Plex hears what you finished and marks it watched. It’s on for every Plex, Jellyfin and Emby source, and Tell the server what I watch in the source’s settings turns it off.
  • Mark a title watched or not watched yourself: on a TV, hold OK on an episode, or on Play for a film; on a phone or tablet, touch and hold.
  • Add source has Cloud drive: play the videos in your own Dropbox or Box. On a TV, scan the QR and sign in on your phone; on a phone or tablet, sign in in the browser.
  • A share on a cloud drive plays with your own account on that drive, added as a source: press the share, sign in on the drive’s page, and it plays, and you can browse the drive from Sources too. A title says so before you press, and a drive you signed into under Settings → Cloud drives is now a source by itself. A drive is a source like any other, so on Free, with a source already, its shares need Pro.
  • On Android, the subtitle files your Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server keeps beside a video are offered under Subtitles, beside the ones inside the file.
  • Search looks through all your sources at once and shows one list, best match first. A title more than one source has is one card that says how many more have it, and a source that doesn’t answer is named above the results.
  • The title page of a search card more than one source has lists the other copies under Also on, and picking one opens the title on that source.
  • A share or folder’s Home and Browse start with Recently added, the titles you copied there last.
  • An empty Watch history now says that what you start playing shows up there. On a TV, the episode under Play on a title page stays easy to read over the artwork, and on a phone the message that a library could not be reached is easier to read.
  • Traditional Chinese fixes a few words that were still Simplified or Mainland usage.

5.1.2

All apps

  • OpenList and Alist libraries added as a WebDAV server now list their folders, instead of showing an empty library.
  • Home for an empty network share no longer says it’s a folder on your device.

5.1.1

All apps

  • Starting the free trial from the Get Pro dialog now carries on with what you were doing, such as adding a source or installing a plugin, instead of taking you to Settings.
  • Subtitle files kept beside a video with the same name, such as Movie.srt or Movie.en.srt beside Movie.mkv, are offered under Subtitles in the player, from an SMB share, a WebDAV server or a folder on an Android phone or tablet. Chinese subtitles in GBK or Big5 show correctly too.

TV

  • A voice search from the remote while Search is open shows your new search, and Back takes you straight home.

5.1.0

All apps

  • Try Yonto Pro free for 7 days on Android TV, phones and tablets: Start 7-day free trial is beside Get Pro, once per device, with no email or payment details. When it ends, everything you added stays saved, and sources past the first wait for Pro.
  • Back on a source form you’ve changed asks before throwing your typing away.
  • For an SMB share or a WebDAV server, Test connection now says when the username or password is wrong, or when there’s nothing at that address, instead of saying it can’t reach the server.
  • A stream that fails to start is tried again straight away.
  • Plugin and repo questions stand apart from their details, and poster badges keep clear of the menu button at large text sizes.

TV

  • The PIN lock screen fits large text sizes, with Forgot PIN? always reachable.

Phone and tablet

  • Setting a Master PIN works with the phone held sideways.

5.0.17

All apps

  • A Jellyfin or Emby address typed without a port, such as 192.168.1.20, now finds the server on its usual port, 8096, instead of saying it can’t reach it.
  • Settings has a Language page: follow the device, or pick one of the ten languages. The change shows at once, without a restart.
  • Settings, Sources is where you arrange your sources: on a TV hold OK to pick one up, move it with Up and Down, and put it down with OK or Back; on a phone or tablet, hold and drag. The source switcher follows the order.
  • The demo library opens with How to add a source: the Set up from your phone clip and step-by-step tutorials for adding a server or a shared folder.
  • With more than one source saved, posters in Continue playing and History say which source they came from.
  • Search waits until a Chinese, Japanese or Korean word has finished being typed.
  • A source no longer says it got stuck after the app comes back from the background.

TV

  • After removing a title from Continue playing, the remote lands on the card that took its place.

Phone and tablet

  • Home’s banner keeps its title and buttons clear of the source’s picture, at large text sizes too.

5.0.16

All apps

  • A film whose sound is AC3, E-AC-3, DTS or TrueHD plays with sound on Android when the device has no decoder of its own for it.

5.0.15

All apps

  • A stream that fails is asked for again, up to twice, and played from where it stopped before “Playback failed” shows, and the player no longer draws its seek bar while a stream is still loading.
  • A stream whose HLS key is written as 32 hex digits plays on Android.
  • Details in the player opens in its panel, like Episodes, instead of taking you out to the title page.
  • Home leaves adult categories out of its shelves and its banner.

Phone and tablet

  • A drag, a double tap or a pinch on the picture does nothing until the video has loaded.

5.0.14

Phone and tablet

  • Home’s banner no longer crashes when its list of picks changes while a later page is showing.

5.0.13

All apps

  • Yonto Pro’s page and the upgrade dialog show the current offer, such as “US$7.47 instead of US$14.95”, and when it ends. With no offer, they show the plain price.
  • Activating a licence that has nothing current on it says so and leaves Pro off, instead of saying Pro is on.
  • The apps say Yonto Player everywhere, and About’s links go to player.yonto.app.

TV

  • Yonto Pro’s page says it takes a licence key, and you can type the key with the remote as well as confirm it on your phone.
  • The offer sits beside the buy QR, and the QR stays clear of the screen’s edge on a TV that crops the picture.
  • The launcher’s banner reads Yonto Player.

5.0.12

All apps

  • The apps are now called Yonto Player.
  • Test connection on a WebDAV or SMB source checks the address, so a wrong one says so instead of “Connected successfully”.
  • Switching source right after pressing Play no longer opens the old source’s title.
  • Yonto Pro’s page says what Free is: one source of your own, and the demo library until you add yours.
  • In Open-source licences, a list item’s wrapped lines stay together.

TV

  • The title page shows the same large artwork as Home, with the poster in a square box.
  • A wrong plugin or repo address shows its error under Read the plugin or Read the repo.
  • The PIN dialog no longer changes width as its prompt changes.

Phone and tablet

  • Switching to a source with more picks in Home’s hero than the last one can no longer crash the app.
  • Quick taps on a screen’s back arrow go back one screen, instead of two or closing the app.
  • The Settings tab no longer reopens a page you had left, after Yonto Player was in the background.

5.0.11

All apps

  • Near the end of a series episode with one after it, the player offers Next episode over the credits.
  • The player’s Up next, Playback finished and error screens all but hide the last frame, so its own text no longer runs into theirs.
  • After the system closed Yonto Player in the background with the player open, the player comes back paused where it was, and a title page restored that way opens instead of saying Not found until Retry.
  • A title page shows an episode you watched to the end with its line all the way across, and the player’s Episodes list does too. Play waits for your history, so a series no longer offers its first episode for a moment before it says Resume.
  • Home opens another source at the top. A source whose site is down says so at its first failed shelf, and on a source with many categories the hero comes up sooner, and a title you open while Home is still filling opens without waiting for every shelf.
  • With the device offline, Home, Browse, Search and a title’s page say “You’re offline” instead of blaming the source, and a source that answers again stops saying Can’t connect.
  • On Free, installing a plugin asks for Pro once, in the upgrade dialog.
  • Forgot PIN? on a device with no unlock code says so after a wrong PIN too.
  • Repos: a repo says how many of what it lists you’ve added (“1 of 81 added”), and a repo of plugins counts its plugins. A repo’s page says when Refresh last read it. Adding a repo’s sources names each kind once, with what it may reach listed under it. A source’s page opened from its repo goes back to the repo, and deleting a source still in its repo says you can add it again from there.
  • “Test this source?” and “Save this source?” ask their question first, with what the source may reach listed under it.
  • The hero’s rank and page dots read on a pale poster, and a wide hero keeps the top of its picture and more of a poster.

TV

  • Set up from your phone: Add source, a source’s editor, Add a repo and Install from URL show a QR, your phone fills in the same form, and the TV’s form fills in for you to check and save. It’s free, and what your phone sends is end to end encrypted.
  • Next episode over the credits takes the remote: OK plays it, Back puts it away, and Left and Right still seek.
  • Back from the player’s Episodes list puts the bar up on Episodes.
  • Back from down Browse’s or Search’s grid goes back to the top first.
  • A remote’s number keys type the PIN.
  • About’s site pages, and Yonto Pro’s buy and account QRs, show their address beside a QR.
  • A muted title in Settings stays readable while the remote is on it, and Down into a row of choices lands on the chosen one.

Phone and tablet

  • The player’s controls sit nearer the screen’s edges, and the scrub handle is a dot that grows while you scrub. Held upright, the player names the series over the episode and keeps Next on one row.
  • The player’s lock holds the phone on its side with auto-rotate off, and through picture-in-picture and Home, and a locked end screen offers Unlock.
  • On a tablet, the player’s speed, tracks and episodes open in a side panel beside the picture.
  • A shelf’s title on Home opens Browse on its category.
  • On a phone on its side, Home, the title page and Search stand clear of the system’s buttons and the camera; on a tablet, Settings pages keep a reading width and a repo’s Add bar stands above the taskbar.
  • Yonto Pro’s Activate is greyed while the licence key is blank.
  • What a page does reads as a button, Delete and Remove are red, a source form’s chosen option wears a tick, and a repo’s address is shown whole when it fits.

5.0.10

All apps

  • A repo lists its plugins in a list of their own, apart from its sources. A repo written the old way, with its plugins among its sources, shows those as entries Yonto Player can’t read; its sources read as before.

TV

  • On a TV set to Chinese with no script, the TV’s own lines (the D-pad hints, History’s hold-OK hint, the Yonto Pro activation lines and the demo’s synopses) follow the same Simplified or Traditional choice as everything else.

5.0.9

All apps

  • The demo library’s clips are framed inside a device outline, so a clip no longer looks like the app itself or shows a second set of controls.
  • A film you watch to the end from now on leaves Continue playing and stays in History; a series stays, on its next episode.
  • Add source saves a source you leave unnamed under its address’s host name, instead of asking for one.
  • Labels are sentence case throughout, and Search’s empty screen says what it will search.
  • A Plex source with a typed server and token, whose server refuses the token, says so, instead of offering a plex.tv sign-in that can’t help.

TV

  • Home says it is a demo library and offers Add source.
  • The source button in Home’s corner spells out the source’s name when it’s focused, and the list of sources ends in “+ Add source”.
  • The demo talks about the remote, not the touch screen.
  • Settings wraps long lines instead of cutting them off.

Phone and tablet

  • Play stands in one place on every title’s page, as wide as the page allows.
  • The light theme’s green and red status lines are dark enough to read on white.
  • The demo’s pictures keep clear of the title on Home.

5.0.8

  • A new icon and TV banner, a starfruit cut across with a play mark at its core, and the apps wear its yellow as their accent instead of blue; on the TV a chosen chip leads with a check, and the phone’s light theme uses a deep olive for its buttons.
  • Yonto Player speaks ten languages: English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Russian, offered per app by the system’s language settings.
  • Your own files are a source. On the TV, Add source offers the box’s storage, a plugged-in USB drive included; on the phone, a folder you pick. A WebDAV server’s folders and, on Android, an SMB share are sources too, with their own sign-in and Test connection. While a files source is active, Browse is a folder view, a tap or OK plays the file, and it resumes from History like any title.
  • In the player, choose audio and subtitle tracks on the phone and the television, audio where the video has more than one and subtitles whenever it has any; the TV also picks a playback speed, which the next episode keeps. Subtitles rise above the controls while they are up, and in a Matroska file a subtitle running at the point you seek to now shows.
  • The phone’s player: pause when headphones come out, fit or fill the picture, pinch to zoom, a lock for touches and orientation, a readout of where a scrub lands, a speed menu and rotation that follows the sensor.
  • On the phone, Home’s hero and a title’s page held upright show the poster across the whole width with the title and Play on it, and the phone follows the system’s light or dark theme, with an Appearance setting to pick one.
  • Home says when you’re offline and reloads when the network comes back; Browse offers to clear filters that match nothing; Search’s empty state says where it looks.
  • Continue Watching is Continue Playing, and the player’s errors say video, not stream.
  • The demo library is recordings of Yonto Player itself, one clip per thing to do, in the app’s language.
  • Yonto Pro: Free has one source of your own, and the demo library until you add yours; Pro adds unlimited sources and installing plugins, for one payment. Turn it on with your licence key or the link in your email on the phone, or with a code you confirm on your phone on the TV; your account page is a QR on the TV. Adding a source or a plugin past what Free allows asks for Pro, a source past the limit says “Off · needs Pro”, a reinstall keeps your device slot, and Pro is checked offline, so being offline never takes it away.
  • The Master PIN: five wrong tries make the lock wait, and Forgot PIN? takes the unlock code your account page shows for the device.
  • About has Open-source licences, What’s new, Help and support, and the terms, refund policy and privacy policy.
  • Adding a repo of two or more sources asks Choose… or Add all; a repo’s page groups its sources under Added and Not added and turns them on and off from there; Add a repo explains what to paste.
  • Sources: the heading names the server when two sources share a name, a source’s line shows the server’s port, deleting the active source returns to the one before it, and the count is of sources turned on.
  • A source whose plugin asked for an address it may not reach says so instead of blaming the network, a request that got no answer says why in plain words, and a plugin that runs out of memory no longer takes the app down. Jellyfin’s and Emby’s field says User ID (only with an API key).
  • The source editor sends a Save refused for no name to the name; on the TV it keeps its verdict in view, and Down from the last field lands on Test connection.
  • On the TV: a source’s libraries draw in the sources’ place; Back from down Home returns to the hero first; History says how to remove a focused card; a Settings page with nothing to preview takes the screen; a confirmation lines up on the left; and a long player error wraps in a centred block.
  • On the phone: Home says it is a demo and offers Add source until you have a source; each History and Continue Playing card has a menu button; a card with no artwork shows its title; a Settings page’s one action is a button; and a drag or a tap on nothing puts the keyboard away.
  • The launcher’s Watch Next row no longer adds a title twice.

5.0.7

  • A film’s title page says Play, or Resume and the time once started, instead of the name its source gives the stream (such as “HD”). A film with one way to play has just that button; one with several keeps them under it.
  • On the TV, a synopsis cut short can be read in full: Up from Play reaches it, and OK opens the whole of it.
  • Continue Watching and History show how far into a title you are even a minute in, inset from the poster’s edge and readable over light artwork.
  • On the TV, History opens on its first title rather than on Clear All.
  • On the TV, the Home icon the remote is on grows into a pill with its name: Browse, Search, History or Settings.
  • The source picker says why a source is red or grey, with the same line Settings shows (“Not logged in”, “Connection: Can’t connect”), and a source that can’t connect is greyed out.
  • Search’s field says movies and shows, and a search that finds nothing says which source it looked in.
  • In the player, Episodes opens the list over the picture instead of leaving for the title page, so the stream keeps going.
  • Home paints the shelves it showed last straight away and refreshes them behind, instead of waiting on the source every time. On the phone, Home draws an outline of the hero and shelves while a source loads, rather than a grey block.
  • Sources is one list of what you have, with a header per repo instead of a folder, and the source picker is a flat list of sources. A repo’s page shows what it offers as Added or Not added, and several can be added at once; adding a repo lands on that page with no separate pick step. Home’s second level, a source’s sites or servers, is called a library.
  • Every source is checked, a repo’s included, five at a time, so a repo says which of its sources can’t be reached.
  • A browser check whose page fails to load at the network no longer counts as passed.
  • On the phone: the code sign-in page leads with its link, the keyboard goes away once a plugin installs, and pages above the tab bar meet it without a strip.

5.0.6

  • Yonto Player runs on Android phones and tablets, as its own app beside the television’s. It has the TV app’s sources, plugins, repos and Master PIN, set up on the phone itself, with Home, Browse, Search, the title page, History and Settings drawn for touch. The player is full screen, with touch controls, swipes for seeking, brightness and volume, picture-in-picture, and a media session that a headset’s buttons reach. On a tablet, Browse sits beside its categories, the title page has two columns, and Settings opens a page beside its list.
  • Each release has two downloads, one for the television and one for phones and tablets, and each app updates only to its own.
  • A plugin that hangs no longer leaves a spinner running forever. The call is abandoned at its deadline and the screen says “’s plugin got stuck”, with Retry, rather than blaming the network. Settings shows the same source as “Plugin got stuck” instead of saying it can’t connect.
  • A stream that stops moving now ends with “Playback got stuck” and Retry, rather than sitting frozen. Only one whose data stopped arriving says to check the connection.
  • Posters load at most four at a time, so a screenful of artwork no longer fires twenty requests at once.
  • A server a plugin reaches by name is no longer refused when the name resolves to a private address, as it does behind a proxy or DNS that answers with local addresses. A plugin that asks for a private address written out, such as a private IP, localhost or a .local name, is still refused unless you typed that address.
  • Back pressed while a code sign-in says it is logged in no longer leaves the page and loses the sign-in.

5.0.5

  • The player’s controls answer a TV’s own remote again. With the box driven by the television’s remote over HDMI, OK on play/pause, Next or the title page did nothing, so a paused film could only be resumed by pressing Back first; the box’s own remote was never affected.

5.0.4

  • The player’s bar puts Previous and Next either side of play/pause, so Next is one press to the right of where the remote lands. The title page sits on the right; the back and forward 10 seconds buttons are gone, since Left and Right on the picture already seek.
  • The player’s own default controls no longer flash over the loading screen for a moment while a stream starts.

5.0.3

  • Home remembers the hero it showed last, for each source and library, and paints it straight away instead of waiting on the source. The banner no longer swaps under you once the source answers; the same picks stay for 36 hours, and only then are they replaced. A source that reads nothing still shows its empty screen rather than a remembered banner over nothing.
  • Back in the player hides the controls first, whether paused or playing, and only leaves the player once nothing is showing. It used to move the remote to the scrub bar and keep the controls up.
  • Home opens with the remote on Play every time. On some launches it started on the source avatar, so the first OK opened the source picker instead of playing.

5.0.2

The first regular release of the plugin platform, carrying everything in the two 5.0.x previews below.

  • Plex: a Plex server plays in Yonto Player, at a typed address or through a Plex login. Signing in is a code shown on the television and entered on a phone; the login’s shared servers become libraries beside a typed one, and each server’s connections are probed at once.
  • Sign-in with a code, which Plex uses: the television holds the session and the plugin never sees it, and posters and streams carry the server’s credential.
  • The source picker opens where you are, offers a login one level down for a source that needs one, skips the picker when there is only one library to read, and says why a row stays red under the remote.
  • Sources are grouped by where they came from: added by you, from repos, from plugins. Several can be turned on, off or deleted together, and a source that needs no login sorts before one that does.
  • A repo is named after its file and can be renamed; its sources are checked when its folder is opened.
  • A source’s browser check can be opened from Settings and from the editor’s Test Connection, not only from Home.
  • The plugins page says on every row what the plugin may ask of you.
  • Long Settings pages fade at their edges, a group’s first row brings its header along, and a read-only row is still a stop for the remote.

5.0.1-preview

A pre-release, never offered as an update.

  • A source that asks for a browser check opens it from Home, and passing it is proved by the call that follows.
  • A plugin that is a source is the source itself, not a copy saved on install, so a plugin update is the source’s update.
  • A saved source runs one call at a time.

5.0.0-preview

A pre-release, never offered as an update: the plugin platform.

  • Every source is now a plugin running on the television in a sandbox that can reach only the servers it declares, and never a private address you didn’t type. Jellyfin and Emby are plugins too.
  • Plugins install from an address or from a repo’s list, behind a dialog that says which servers the plugin reaches and what it may ask for; an installed plugin stands in front of the built-in copy of the same plugin, and the page offers the built-in one back when it is newer.
  • Repos: a Yonto Player repo is added from Settings and its sources are picked from; a repo’s sources follow their repo.
  • Settings became levels and groups like Android TV’s own, with a source’s page, health and login under it.
  • The source picker replaced the rail: the top-left avatar opens the sources, and a badge picks among a source’s libraries.
  • Browse shows categories and filters as pills that open lists.
  • The player has a transport bar with controls, time remaining and a scrub bar that shows it has the remote.
  • History and resume points are kept per source, a title from a deleted source says so, and Watch Next cards open where a title moved.
  • An address field asks for an English keyboard.
  • A command-line tool for writing plugins, yonto-plugin: lint, doctor, record and replay fixtures, bundle, and a conformance suite.

4.5.1

  • The D-pad moves focus out of text fields, stays inside a shelf at its ends, and Back no longer pops two screens in the player.
  • The whole hero shows on launch, the playback buttons stay on screen at 1080p, and focus highlights no longer stack on cards and buttons.

1.2.0

  • Resume playback and watch history, with progress bars on Continue Watching cards.
  • Auto-play the next episode with an “Up next” countdown.
