History on your TV and phone

Each device keeps its own Continue playing and History, unless you turn on Sync, part of Yonto Pro, which keeps your history, resume points, Watch list and recent searches the same on every device.

  • Continue playing on Home: the titles you are partway through. A film you watch to the end leaves it; a series stays, on its next episode, until you finish the last one. From a Jellyfin, Plex or Emby server it also holds the titles the server lists, below.
  • History: on a television, the History icon at the top right of Home; on a phone or tablet, the Continue playing heading on Home, or Settings → Watch history, which also opens it when everything you played is finished and Continue playing is empty. It opens Watch history, every title you have played, newest first, up to the 100 most recent.
  • Watch list: titles you saved to watch later, from the + button on a title’s page on a television, or the playlist icon under Play on a phone or tablet or, on a phone or tablet, from a poster’s menu in Search, Browse and Home. It shows on Home after Continue playing: on a television the shelf ends in See all, and on a phone or tablet its heading opens the full list. Starting a title takes it off the list, since it is in Continue playing then, and deleting a source takes its titles off.
  • Recent searches: with nothing typed, Search lists what you searched for, newest first, up to the 10 most recent. A search counts once you open a result from it or press Search on the keyboard, not while you type. Choose one to search it again.
  • Where you stopped in each film and each episode. A title’s page offers Resume from there.
  • On Android TV, your launcher’s Watch Next row shows what you are partway through, on launchers that have one.

All of it is shared by every source on that device. With more than one source saved, a poster in Continue playing and in History wears its source’s name, so you can tell where it opens from.

With Sync on, on devices that sync Watch history and Resume points:

  • What you watch on one device shows in History and Continue playing on the others, and Resume on another device picks up where you stopped.
  • Removing a title, or Clear all, removes it on every device that syncs History.
  • What syncs is encrypted on your devices, so neither our server nor we can read it (Privacy policy).
  • A source you keep off Sync keeps its history to this device too.

On devices that sync Recent searches, the list is the same on each: a search you make on one goes to the top on all of them, and removing one, or Clear, removes it on all of them. The same search typed on two devices is one search, whatever its case or spacing.

Without Sync, which is how Yonto Player starts and the only way on Free:

  • Watching on the television does not change Continue playing or History on your phone, and watching on the phone does not change the television’s.
  • Adding the same server on both does not join their History, but the server’s watched marks, resume points and continue-watching list show on both (see below).
  • Your history is left out of the device’s backups and device transfers, so a new device starts empty.
  • It never reaches us: your sources, history and settings stay on the device (Privacy policy).

To carry on with a series on another screen without Sync, open the title there and choose the episode. That device starts it from the beginning unless it played that episode before.

For a Jellyfin, Plex or Emby server, Yonto Player reads the server’s watched marks and resume points, and tells the server what you watch.

  • What it reads. A title or an episode the server counts watched wears the full line, and where the server has you part-way through, Resume picks up there. Where this device has its own place for the same episode, the more recent of the two wins.

  • What it tells the server. While you play, Yonto Player says when playback starts, where you are every ten seconds, when you pause, resume or jump, and when you stop, so the server’s own apps and your other devices see it. A report that does not get through is dropped, and nothing about it is shown.

  • Marking by hand. On a television, hold OK on an episode, or on Play for a film, to mark it watched or not watched. On a phone or tablet, touch and hold it. The server is told too.

  • Turning it off. In the source’s editor, Tell the server what I watch is on. Turn it off, for example to try Yonto Player beside the official app, and the server is left exactly as it was. What the server says is still read.

  • Continue playing. When Home opens, Yonto Player asks the server for its own list, at most once a minute: Continue Watching on Jellyfin and Emby, On Deck on Plex. Those titles join Continue playing, newest first, so a series you started on your phone shows on the television too. A title on both shows once, on whichever you watched later. Emby does not say when, so its titles come after the ones that are dated. Plex’s On Deck also holds the next episode of a series you are watching, not only where you stopped. A title only the server has opens its page, where Resume plays the episode the server has you in (for Plex’s On Deck, that can be the next episode instead). It has no Remove, since it is not in History; it leaves Continue playing when the server drops it.

History is Yonto Player’s own, not the server’s, and starts empty.

For a folder, a USB drive, an SMB share or a WebDAV share, there is no server keeping a history at all: a video you play shows in History and Continue playing under its file name, on that device, and on your other devices if Sync carries the source.

  • On a television, hold OK on a title in Watch history to remove it, and choose Clear all at the top to remove everything.
  • On a phone or tablet, each entry has a menu with Details and Remove, and Clear all is in the bar’s menu.

To take a title off your watch list, press the tick on its page (the + or playlist icon turns into one), hold OK on it in the list on a television, or choose Remove from watch list in its menu on a phone or tablet.

To remove a recent search, hold OK on it on a television, or press its ✕ on a phone, tablet or Mac; Clear under the list (beside its heading on a phone, tablet or Mac) removes them all.

Removing a title also forgets where you stopped in each of its episodes, and Clear all forgets every one of them. Updating Yonto Player keeps your history; uninstalling it, or clearing its data, deletes it.

“Nothing watched yet” Watch history is empty: nothing has been played on this device yet, or it was cleared. A line under it says: “Anything you start playing shows up here, so you can pick it up again later.” History from another device shows here only with Sync on.

“Clear your entire watch history? This can’t be undone.” Shown when you choose Clear all. It clears this device, and, with Sync on, every device that syncs History.

“The source this was watched on is gone” The title belongs to a source you deleted on this device, so there is nowhere left to open it from. Remove it from History, or look for the title on another source.

Troubleshooting lists every message the app shows.
