Plugins and repos

A plugin is what lets Yonto Player read one kind of site or server. Yonto Player comes with plugins for the common kinds of server, marked Built in in Settings, Plugins. You can add others, and they are marked Installed.

The page lists plugins in two groups. Sources are plugins for one kind of server or site, like Jellyfin or Plex. Formats read sources written in a format many sites share: MacCMS format and XPTV format. A format comes with no sources of its own; you supply the address, or a repo does. An XPTV source is a small program, which Yonto Player fetches from that address and runs in its sandbox.

Each plugin runs in a sandbox inside Yonto Player. It can reach only the hosts it declares, and that you allowed. Under Settings, Plugins, each plugin lists what it reaches, for example “Reaches nothing until it is configured”.

  1. Choose Settings, Plugins, Install from URL.
  2. Paste the plugin’s address, which ends in .zip (a bare .js file works too), and choose Read the plugin.
  3. Yonto Player shows the plugin’s name and version and where it can reach. Read it, then choose Install.

The dialog also says what happens next. A plugin that is a kind of source, like Emby, says “You’ll set one up next” and takes you to the Add source form with it chosen. A plugin that is itself a source says that it adds the plugin as a source and switches to it. If it replaces a built-in plugin, the dialog says so, and removing it brings the built-in one back. A plugin installed from an address stays until you remove it from the plugin’s page.

On a television, Set up from your phone, under Read the plugin, saves typing the address with the remote: scan its code with your phone’s camera, paste the address into the page that opens and choose Send to the TV. The address lands in the field, and you choose Read the plugin as before. Sources says more about how it works.

Only install a plugin from an address you trust.

A repo is one address that holds many ready-made sources. A repo can list sources, plugins or both.

  1. Choose Settings, Repos, Add a repo.
  2. Paste the repo’s address and choose Read the repo.
  3. Yonto Player shows what the repo holds.
    • If it lists one source, choose Add.
    • If it lists several, Add all (n) adds every one of them as a source, and Choose… lets you pick which.

On a television, Set up from your phone, under Read the repo, takes the repo’s address from your phone in the same way.

You can pick more later on the repo’s page, with Select….

On a repo’s page you can also Refresh it and Remove this repo. Removing a repo removes the sources you added from it too. The plugins you installed from it stay, and they stop being offered updates.

A repo is one address of someone else’s choosing, so as with any source, add only repos you trust.
