Getting started
Install
Section titled “Install”Download the app for your device from the download page. Android asks you to allow installs from the app you opened the file with, then installs it. Once Yonto Player is installed, About checks for new versions and installs them when you choose.
The demo library
Section titled “The demo library”Yonto Player opens on a small demo library: short recordings of Yonto Player itself, each showing how to use one thing. Play and pause, seeking, speed, audio tracks, subtitles, Up next, picking up where you left off, touch gestures (on a phone or tablet) and the remote are all in there, and so are tours of Yonto Player on a tablet, an iPhone and a Mac, under Basics, Tracks and speed, Controls and Devices. They stream from player.yonto.app, and it is there so you can try every screen, and learn the player, before you add anything.
- On a television, Home shows the picks as a banner, then shelves below it. The icons at the top right are Browse, Search, History and Settings.
- On a phone or tablet, the tabs are Home, Browse, Search, History and Settings. A shelf’s name on Home opens that category in Browse, and Continue playing opens History.
Yonto Player provides no content of its own beyond this demo. Everything else comes from a source you add, and what you add is your responsibility: only use libraries you are entitled to access.
Add your own library
Section titled “Add your own library”On Home, the demo library’s card has an Add source button. On any device, go to Settings, then Sources, then Add source. You can also open the source chip at the top left of Home and choose Add source.
The form opens on Jellyfin. The type list at the top lets you pick another kind of source, which Sources explains.
Connect a Jellyfin server
Section titled “Connect a Jellyfin server”- Choose Settings, Sources, Add source.
- Leave the type on Jellyfin.
- Give the source a name if you like. Left empty, it is named after the server, like
jellyfin.example.com. - Enter the Server URL in full, like
https://jellyfin.example.com:8096. - Enter your Username and Password. Leave the password empty if your account has none.
- Choose Test connection. A working server answers “Connected successfully”.
- Choose Save.
On a phone you land on Home, on your new source. On a television, pressing OK on a field opens an on-screen keyboard, and Back closes it. Or skip the typing: choose Set up from your phone at the top of the form, scan its code with your phone’s camera, fill in the form on your phone and send it. The television’s form fills in; check it, then choose Save.
When you add a source of your own, the demo library leaves the list. Delete your last source and the demo comes back.
Free and Pro
Section titled “Free and Pro”Yonto Player is free with one source of your own, and the demo library until you add yours. Yonto Pro is a one-time purchase that adds as many sources as you like and installing plugins. Bought on our website, it works on every Yonto Player app; bought in the App Store, on the iPhones and iPads on your Apple Account, and on every other Yonto Player app once you add your email. Adding a second source of your own, from Add source or from a repo, asks for Pro, and so does installing a plugin. The sources you already have stay.
Bought on our website, your licence key comes by email. To turn Pro on:
- On a phone or tablet, open the link in that email, or scan the code it shows on a computer, and Yonto Player turns Pro on. Or go to Settings, then Yonto Pro, enter the key and choose Activate.
- On a television, go to Settings, then Yonto Pro, and choose Activate with your phone. Scan its code with your phone, or open the address it shows and enter the code, then enter your key.
- On an iPhone or iPad, you can instead buy Pro there with Get Pro, through the App Store, and it turns on with no key. Restore purchases turns it on again on another iPhone or iPad. To use it on a TV, an Android phone or tablet or the Mac too, fill in Add your email on that page, then issue a key on your account page (Pro says how).
Switch between sources
Section titled “Switch between sources”Open the source chip at the top left of Home to see your sources, and pick one. Continue playing and History are shared by every source.
Pick up where you left off
Section titled “Pick up where you left off”Yonto Player remembers where you stopped in each title. Continue playing on Home takes you straight back, and History (Watch history) lists everything you have played. A film you watch to the end leaves Continue playing and stays in History; a series stays, on its next episode, until you finish the last one. On a phone, each entry has a menu with Details and Remove, and Clear all is in the bar’s menu. On a television, press and hold an entry to remove it.
