Move from the official app to Yonto Player
Moving takes a few minutes: your library, watched marks and resume points stay on your server, so you add the server to Yonto Player once, from your phone, and pick up where the official app left you. Nothing carries over by itself, and little needs to, so keep the official app installed until you are sure.
What carries over
Section titled “What carries over”- Your library: yes. It lives on your server, and Yonto Player reads it from there as it is: your films and your TV series, with their posters and descriptions.
- Your sign-in: no. You sign in again in Yonto Player. For Jellyfin and Emby, that is a username and password on the server, or an API key and user ID; Yonto Player uses the server’s own users, not Emby Connect. For Plex, you sign in with a code at
plex.tv/link, or type your own server’s address. - What you watched and where you stopped: yes, from the server. Yonto Player reads the server’s watched marks and resume points, so what you watched in the official app wears its mark and Resume picks up where it left you. Home’s Continue playing also lists what the server lists for you (Continue Watching on Jellyfin and Emby, On Deck on Plex), and History starts empty. History on your TV and phone explains where Yonto Player keeps its own.
- The official app’s settings: no. They stay in that app.
- Music, photos and live TV: no. Yonto Player shows a server’s film and TV series libraries only.
What you need
Section titled “What you need”- Your server’s address, like
https://jellyfin.example.com:8096, and your username and password; or, for Plex, your Plex account. - Yonto Player on your television, from the download page, and a phone to type on.
- Install Yonto Player. The official app can stay installed.
- Choose Settings, Sources, Add source, then Source type and your kind of server.
- For Jellyfin or Emby, choose Set up from your phone, scan the QR code and fill in the form on your phone. For Plex, choose Log in next to Account and enter the code at
plex.tv/link. - Choose Test connection. A working server answers “Connected successfully”. Choose Save.
That is the whole move. Once you have the address and password to hand, it is quicker than typing them with the remote: the step-by-step videos for Jellyfin and Emby show all of it in 37 seconds. Plex has its own page for the code sign-in.
Try both side by side
Section titled “Try both side by side”Both apps can be installed at once, and Yonto Player is free with one source, so you can compare them on your own library before deciding.
- Watching in Yonto Player tells the server, so the official app shows it as watched and, for Jellyfin and Emby, resumes there too; Plex is told what you finished, not yet where you stopped. To try Yonto Player and leave the official app exactly as you left it, turn off Tell the server what I watch in the source’s editor; Yonto Player still reads what the server says.
- A Jellyfin, Plex or Emby server converts a file the television cannot play, as it does for the official app, unless you turn off Let the server convert videos in the source’s editor. On a television without HDR, an Emby server without Emby Premiere and a Plex server without Plex Pass do not tone-map, so an HDR file plays as stored unless it needs converting anyway, when its colours are left as they are: try a few of your harder files, not only the easy ones.
- Yonto Player and the official clients says when each one fits, and What Yonto Player does not do lists what you would give up.
Your first source is free; more sources need Pro. Pro is one payment, not a subscription, for up to 5 devices, TV, phone and tablet together, and there is no Yonto account.
If something goes wrong
Section titled “If something goes wrong”“Server URL needs a full address, like https://example.com:8096”
The Server URL isn’t an address, such as one with a space in it.
Type it like 192.168.1.20 or https://jellyfin.example.com:8096.
“Can’t reach Source”
The server didn’t answer.
An address with no port and no https:// is tried as you typed it, then on Jellyfin and Emby’s own port, 8096, so 192.168.1.20 finds a server on 192.168.1.20:8096.
If yours listens on another port, add it after a colon.
Otherwise check that the server is on and that this device is on its network.
“Check the username and password by editing the source in Settings.” Jellyfin or Emby turned down the login. Use the server’s own username and password, the ones the official app signs in with, not an Emby Connect account. Go to Settings, Sources, choose the source, then Edit, and correct them.
“This device couldn’t play this video. (code)” The television cannot decode this file as it is stored, and nothing converted it. On Jellyfin, Plex or Emby, check that Let the server convert videos is on in the source’s editor. Otherwise try another version of the title if it has one.
Troubleshooting lists every message the app shows.
