Play your Plex library on Android TV in another app
Yonto Player plays your Plex films and TV series on Android TV in a different app, signed in with a code from your phone, with the watched marks and resume points your server already has. With Pro, it also puts Jellyfin, Emby, your NAS and your Dropbox or Box beside Plex, with one search across them, and the Plex app can stay installed beside it while you decide.
Plex’s redesigned Android TV app began reaching televisions in October 2026. If you’d rather watch your Plex server in another app than get used to it, this page says what changes and what stays the same.
The Android phone and tablet app shows the same from Plex and signs in the same way, so this page holds there too (on a phone or tablet). On an Android phone or tablet, an iPhone or an iPad, a Plex film or episode can also be downloaded to watch offline.
What Yonto Player shows from Plex
Section titled “What Yonto Player shows from Plex”- Your film and TV series libraries, each under the name it has on your server, with posters and backdrops.
- A title’s page: its description, genres, year and age rating.
- A series’ episodes, grouped by season and numbered like S1E01.
- A film with more than one version: each is offered, named by its resolution.
- Search, across the films and series of the server you are browsing.
- More than one server. Logged in, each server shared with your Plex account is a library of its own within the one source. With more than one, the server’s name sits beside the source at the top left of Home; choose it to pick another.
Plex’s collections, playlists and recommendation rows are not there: Yonto Player lists each library’s titles, and its own Continue playing and History. Plex’s own Watchlist is not read either: Yonto Player keeps its own Watch list on the device.
How you sign in
Section titled “How you sign in”- A server shared with you: choose Log in and enter the code at
plex.tv/linkon your phone. You type your Plex password on Plex’s own page, never in Yonto Player. - Your own server: the sign-in does not bring it in, so type its address in the source’s form, and its Plex token too: a server signed in to a Plex account asks for one, unless its owner allowed your network without it in the server’s settings.
One source can hold both: your own server first, then each server shared with you. Set up Plex on a TV without typing a password goes through it step by step.
What carries over from the Plex app
Section titled “What carries over from the Plex app”- Your library: yes. It lives on your server, and Yonto Player reads it from there.
- What you watched and where you stopped: yes. Yonto Player reads the server’s watched marks and resume points, so a watched title wears its mark and Resume picks up where you stopped. Home’s Continue playing also lists Plex’s On Deck, which holds the next episode of a series as well as where you stopped, and History starts empty.
- What you watch in Yonto Player: the server is told. Watching in Yonto Player marks the title watched on the server and moves where the Plex app resumes. Turn off Tell the server what I watch in the source’s editor to leave the server as it is. History on your TV and phone says where Yonto Player keeps its own.
- The Plex app’s settings: no. They stay in that app.
What it does not do
Section titled “What it does not do”- HDR is tone-mapped only with Plex Pass. Yonto Player tells the server what this device can play, and the server converts a file beyond it, such as 4K on a 1080p box. Plex tone-maps HDR for a screen without it only when the server owner has Plex Pass; without it, an HDR file plays as stored unless it needs converting anyway, and then its colours are left as they are. A converted video offers the subtitle files beside the video, not the ones inside it. Turn off Let the server convert videos in the source’s editor to always play the file as stored. On Android it decodes AC3, E-AC-3, DTS and TrueHD sound itself when the device cannot (DTS, TrueHD and Dolby audio on Android TV).
- Films and TV series only. Music, photos and live TV do not appear.
- One Plex account per source. It reads what the account that entered the code can see, and has no way to switch between the users of a Plex Home.
What Yonto Player does not do lists the rest.
Free or Pro
Section titled “Free or Pro”A Plex source is one source, however many servers it holds, so it is free. Adding a second source, such as a Jellyfin server or a folder on a NAS, needs Pro. Pro is one payment, not a subscription, for up to 5 devices, TV, phone and tablet together, and there is no Yonto account.
Try it beside the Plex app
Section titled “Try it beside the Plex app”Both apps can be installed at once. What you watch in Yonto Player is told to the server, so the Plex app shows it watched too, unless you turn that off in the source’s editor. Try a few of your harder files too, such as 4K or HDR ones: the server converts what the television cannot play, and tone-maps HDR for a screen without it only with Plex Pass. Move from the official app to Yonto Player says more about moving, and Yonto Player and the official clients when each one fits.
If something goes wrong
Section titled “If something goes wrong”“No Plex server is shared with this account. For your own server, add its address and token by editing the source in Settings.” You logged in with the account that owns the server, and no other server is shared with it. Type your server’s address in the source’s form, with its Plex token, which a server signed in to a Plex account usually asks for.
Troubleshooting lists every message the app shows.
