Skip intro and credits on Android TV and phones

Yonto Player puts a Skip intro button over the picture when an episode’s opening starts, so one press of OK on the remote, or one tap on a phone, takes you straight to the story. It does the same for a recap and for the credits, and over the credits of an episode that has a next one, the button says Next episode and plays it. It works with your Plex, Jellyfin and Emby server’s own markers and, from 5.4.0, with your own files, your NAS and your Dropbox or Box too, on Android TV, Google TV, phones and tablets. It is in the free app, not behind Pro. Free is the whole player with one source of your own, such as your Plex server or one NAS share, and Pro adds more.

This page is about the videos on your own server, drive or files. Yonto Player provides no content.

  1. Your server’s own markers come first. When your Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server has marked where the intro, a recap or the credits are, Yonto Player uses exactly those, and nothing replaces them. Jellyfin keeps them from version 10.10 once it has scanned the title, and Plex and Emby once their own intro and credits detection has run.
  2. TheIntroDB fills the gaps. Where the source marks no intro or no credits, Yonto Player asks TheIntroDB, a community database of skip times, for that video. That covers your own files on a NAS, a USB drive or a cloud drive, once the files library has matched a title, and a film or an episode from a server that has not marked it.

Yonto Player asks TheIntroDB by the title’s public TheTVDB, TMDB or IMDb id, never by its name or its file’s name. For your own files, that id comes from the files library’s match, from an .nfo file beside the video, or from an id in the file’s name; if a match is wrong, Wrong title? on the title’s page corrects it (your files on Android TV). An episode is asked about with its season and episode number, and every video with its length, which tells a theatrical cut from an extended one.

Skip data by TheIntroDB.

Open Settings → Player → Skip intro and credits. For each of Intro, Recap and Credits, pick one:

  • Ask, the default: the button shows while the segment plays, for 8 seconds, and skips only when you press it.
  • Skip automatically: the button counts down 5 seconds and then skips by itself. On a TV, Back cancels that one skip.
  • Never skip: no button.

On a TV, Back puts the button away for that segment. Once you put it away, or an Ask’s 8 seconds run out, moving around inside the segment does not bring it back. Going back to before the segment, or back into it after you got past it, offers it again, so a skip you did not want is one press from undone.

Look up skip times online, on the same page, is on by default. Turn it off and Yonto Player skips only what the source marks, and never asks TheIntroDB.

When it is on, the request goes straight from your device to TheIntroDB with the title’s id, the season and episode, the video’s length, and the app’s name and version. TheIntroDB sees your IP address, as with any web request. Nothing about it goes through us (Privacy policy). An answer is kept on your device for a week, or a day when TheIntroDB knew of nothing, and Clear cache deletes it.

  • A title TheIntroDB does not know gets no button, unless the source marked it. It is a community database, so a new or rare title may have no skip times yet.
  • A title with no id is never looked up: a file the library could not match, a source with its online lookup turned off and no id in an .nfo file or the file’s name, or an episode whose season and episode numbers are not known.
  • A source that marks both the intro and the credits is not looked up at all, and a missing recap alone is not looked up either.
  • The lookup starts once the video plays, so playback never waits for it. On a video whose intro begins straight away, the button can appear a moment after the start.
  • A live stream is never looked up and shows no skip button.
  • No previews or adverts are skipped: the choices are for the intro, the recap and the credits.
  • Yonto Player does not find intros by itself by listening to the audio or scanning the picture; it reads what your server marked and what TheIntroDB knows.

Sources has the same rules beside the rest of what each source does.
